Icon Studios - //Identifying your requirements

Before approaching a photographer it is important to consider a number of items. Ask yourself the following questions.

1) What type or style of images will best represent your project goals?
Do you have in mind something in particular, or have you seen a style of image you want for your project? Alternatively, would you like the Photographer to help you develop a suitable concept for your project?

2) What are you trying to achieve?
The final purpose of the images may determine the requirements of the photography. Be sure to explain to the photographer your aims. The post-production requirements for any project will also vary depending upon the desired purposes for the images.

3) What is your budget?

Have a realistic idea of budget based on the amount of work you are asking from the photographer. Remember that every hour on site shooting requires in general 1 - 2 hours additional work. If you do have budget constraints be sure to tell the photographer up front as they may be able to work out more cost effective ways of achieving your desired outcome.

4) Are there any special or unusual requirements?
Every photographic project is different. For example; some may need specific or unusual deliverables, require photography to occur within set time periods, or require consultation with third parties to be able to complete the brief. Speak to the photographer about these requirements as they may necessitate a certain amount of pre-production or simply sufficient lead time. If you are uncertain, the photographer can help you determine accurate deadlines for your project.
Consider involving the photographer early, as the ability to utilize their creativity and technical knowledge may greatly enhance the outcome of your project. A good photographer will be able to make suggestions and recommendations on ways to better communicate your business to the end viewer, and will always be a valuable addition to your team.
